Listin er máttarstólpi tjáningarfrelsis. Listafólk beitir gáfu sinni og skapar verk sem hafa form og öðlast merkingu þegar þau eru móttekin í samfélaginu. Listin ræktar lífið með hugrekki og hugsjónum og spyrnir gegn eyðileggingu. Tjáningarfrelsið vill fara yfir landamæri án þess að vera með vegabréf og tilskilin leyfi. Það stekkur yfir aðskilnaðarmúra undir skothríð andstæðra skoðana. Viðbrögðin geta verið miskunnarlaus þegar frelsið fer út fyrir tilsett mörk. Þegar einhver ögrar með listinni og brýtur hin helgu vé. Listin ver mennskuna og særir engan nema þann sem móðgast og afhjúpast. Listafólk ætti alls staðar að vera frjálst til að skapa þau verk sem það vill, frjálst til að tjá sig án ótta og ritskoðunar og kúgunar, frjálst til að skapa óræð listaverk sem breyta samfélaginu.

Stjórn Bandalags íslenskra listamanna lýsir yfir eindregnum stuðningi við baráttu gjörningalistamannsins ODEE fyrir tjáningarfrelsi sínu. Gjörningalistaverkið „We’re SORRY“ hefur leitt til málaferla sem rekin eru í Bretlandi. BÍL skorar á Samherja hf. að virða tjáningarfrelsi listamannsins og falla frá málsókninni.
A Statement from the Federation of Icelandic Artists Regarding Samherji’s Lawsuit Against ODEE
Art is the lynchpin of the freedom of expression. Artists use their talent to create works that take form and gain meaning as they are received in society. Art nourishes life with courage and ideals and opposes destruction. The freedom of expression wants to cross borders without a passport or necessary licence. It leaps over walls of separation, under fire from opposing views. When freedom crosses approved boundaries, the reaction can be merciless. When someone uses art to provoke and breaks the sanctuary. Art protects our humanity and hurts no one except those who are offfended and thereby reveal themselves. Artists everywhere should be free to create the work they want to, free to express themselves without fear or censorship or oppression, free to create ambiguous art that changes society.

The board of the Federation of Icelandic Artists (BÍL) proclaims emphatic support to the performance artist ODEE’s fight for his freedom of expression. His performance piece “We’re SORRY” has led to a lawsuit that’s being pursued in Britain. BÍL calls upon Samherji hf. to respect the artist’s freedom of expression and drop the lawsuit.
