The Federation of Icelandic Artists (BÍL) is an organisation of professional artists’ associations, established on 6 September 1928.
The purpose of the federation is to work towards the promotion of the arts and safeguard the interests of artists on a broad basis. Today, 16 professional artists’ associations across all art forms are members of the federation.
The board of BÍL is composed of the chairs of the professional artists’ associations.

The president of BÍL is elected for a term of two years and serves as the spokesperson of the board, representing it externally and in dealings with the government.
The board of BÍL appoints representatives of artists to various councils and committees organized by the state and municipality. Additionally, it acts as a consulting body for the government on most matters concerning arts and culture.
The president of BÍL also serves as a representative on The Nordic Council of Artists.
The current president is Jóna Hlíf Halldórsdóttir, elected at the general meeting on March 16, 2024.
The secretary is Margrét Tryggvadóttir, chair of the Writers’ Union of Iceland.
The treasurer is Gunnar Hrafnsson, chair of the Association of Icelandic Musicians.
